Yes….there is a real reason why I say this.
Back when I was in public school (no, the dinosaurs were extinct long before then, I assure you), our teachers and school officials knew how to handle problem children (I know…I was one of them). You were subject to:
– Having to write sentences on paper/blackboard for detention
– Having to stay after and write out dictionary pages (someone in our class had a complete handwritten dictionary before the end of the year – it was awesome!)
– Our principal had a paddle…with AIRHOLES for the really nasty kids
I can see some parents thinking “Oh how HORRIBLE! Why would your parents allow this?”
Ummm…because, at the time, I needed it? Yes…I’ll admit it. I wasn’t the most obedient kid in the school.
The thing that gobsmacks me is this…..the public schools now are mandated to NOT PUNISH PROBLEM KIDS IN SCHOOL! They are simply sent home for the parents to deal with. Does this teach the kid anything? Heck yeah it does….just misbehave, and you won’t have to stay in school.
Way to go, school district. You just undermined yourselves into a pit that you’ll never crawl out of. Yes, I can hear some of you say “But it’s the PARENT’S job to discipline their kids!” Yes….it is….but why in the name of all that doesn’t suck doesn’t the school discipline them THERE and KEEP them in school? I’ll tell you why…and it’s really simple.
They’re too gawd-awfully scared….of lawsuits. Yes….it’s because we’re sue-happy that this has come to pass. People will cave ANYWHERE at the mention of a “lawsuit” *GASP!* This has made Bush’s “No Child Left Behind Act” to be known as the biggest JOKE ever! It should be called the “No Child That Causes No Problems Ever Left Behind Act”. The schools are run by a bunch of kiss-ass PUSSIES who are afraid to exert their authority to help mold and shape our future generation to become productive citizens, and then we all wonder why kids today are such malcontents.
Because….they’re allowed to get away with it, and the schools just don’t want to deal with it. This is the crux as to why homeschooling is becoming the up-and-coming trend these days. The school isn’t doing it’s part, so it’s up to us as parents to not only handle the discipline for everything, but also to educate our children.
Here’s another part that’ll floor you. I was sitting with my child’s teacher, and showed them the books we’re using (used books from the thift shops, but still very much valid), and the teachers were complimenting our choices, and said they were actually BETTER than the books THEY had! I was stunned to hear this!
So I say this….schools should only be paid/given grants based on the QUALITY of teaching they do, and what they do to help this new generation of kids to become helpful, productive citizens who actually know how to do things in life. It saddens me to see these teen-agers who can’t handle the most rudimentary skills, like math and writing, yet seem to have gobs of money for cars, jewelry, fancy clothes, and whatever else (yes, I know most of this comes from the money-oozing parents). Guess they didn’t teach them any values. Pity.
So until the school system decides to grow a pair, and take a more active role in our childrens’ development, they should get NO more help from the community until they re-think their priorities and learn from how they used to do things. I think there were a lot fewer malcontents out there back then as well.
Oh, and for anyone who wants to know…..our kids are AHEAD of the grade curve, learning-wise, thanks to homeschooling. I’m getting to be a real fan of it now! So stick that in your pipe and smoke it, superintendents!
