I have grown to despise going grocery shopping, which is kind of a sad thing, as shopping is one of my favorite things to do in order to relax. The ability to just sit back, plan out the meals for the coming days, and perhaps throw in a few impulse items as well in order to spice things up.
I think these days that tradition has been soured by the mass majority, and sadly to put a bit of a stereotypical spin on things…..it’s shopping at Wal-Mart that has become problematic….and that stems from the time you even enter the parking lot! On a busy day, good luck trying to get out of an aisle to turn into the main drive lane to get to the next aisle – they are locked bumper-to-bumper just to make sure no one gets ahead of their precious position. Oh and crosswalks? Good luck on those working – you get people who will try to cut off pedestrians or wait until juuuuuust after the person crosses, and then guns and revs their engine like you were a massive inconvenience to their day.
Once you get parked (assuming someone hasn’t parked across 2 spaces – or parked lengthways in order to preserve their precious land-assault vehicle), then it’s a matter of getting INTO the store. Once you make sure you aren’t going to become an impression under someone’s tire, and then navigate past all of the solicitors (which doesn’t it say in the Wal-Mart handbook that they don’t allow this?), then you go to get your cart while a few others are busily using hand sanitizing wipes to wipe down the carts before shopping.
Is that why they look shinier now? Everyone sanitizing the heck out of these things? They are SHOPPING CARTS for crying out loud.
When I get into the store, I try my best to be courteous and let people get through when they need to get to where they are going, BUT…..when I try to get across, where it the etiquette then? Out the window – that’s where! Just like in the parking lot, they lock bumper-to-bumper to make sure no one gets past their position in line to where they are going. It’s gotten to the point where you just want to carry a bullhorn with you and belt out “Make a hole!” just to get past!
Yeah…..grocery shopping no longer really carries a good vibe with it to me anymore. The big blue box store kinda killed that feeling off.
