That’s the sound I hear just about every day when I go out and about now………..boom boom boom boom boom boom…..
I hear it when these shiny new cars drive by with the new generation driving about in them, and I get nostalgic, but not for the usual reasons. I think it’s one of those generational things because my parents probably thought our music was weird and awful too for the most part (of course, my mom was one of the cool ones – she got into music with me and we had fun exploring it!).
To me, music is about energy – the kind of intangible energy that flows through a song and makes one feel energized. Today’s music for the most part, does NOT do this for me. It seems today’s music is all about how you can calculate the beats per minute and put something to it. I’m sorry, but to me, music is much, MUCH more than that. I went to a dance club the other week for karaoke and I ended up checking out the dance floor to hear what was being played. I didn’t last more than a few minutes before going back out to the karaoke bar part. To me, the dance floor just had loud, thumping noise that did absolutely nothing for me.
Now don’t get me wrong though! There are still a handful of artists out there that still get me excited for whenever they release a new album, but you really have to go looking for them because like back then, they are not played on mainstream radio. So………I went back to sleuthing out new music like I used to – only without the nostalgic trip to the record store to flip through the albums and gaze lovingly at the artwork.
Oh yeah…….people used to pay attention to that. An album cover was all the more reason to listen to a new album. To me, if the cover was good, chances are the content would be awesome too! Suzy Andrews, Helen Schneider, Danielle Dax and Lene Lovich proved that point many times! I actually wished that someday someone would have me do an album cover for them – that would be a dream! Sadly, I doubt that dream will ever come true.
I love music – always have, always will………..when I find some of the real stuff – not the thumping crap there is out there now though.
