Tonight I was reminded of something that I usually live by – I don’t really do multi-player games, least of all, MMORPG’s.
I have a few reasons behind this, and the games that cause me to think this way. When I play a game, I like to have fun with it. Maybe that’s why I retreat to Nintendo-land every so often – because they make games that are just all-around FUN.
To date, I think one of the most-played games out there is World of Warcraft. It looks beautiful, and I’m sure people who play it love the heck out of it, but I’ll never play it for two reasons:
One – even after you BUY the game, you still have to pay monthly to KEEP playing it. To me, this makes no sense. I get it that they have to pay for server maintenance and other fees such as that, but I guess I’m a cheap-ass. When I pay for a game, I like to pay for it and be done with it. Now…….I am a sucker for some forms of DLC though – add-ons to games that I have, BUT……..when you pay for them, they are yours – you don’t have to keep paying to keep using them.
Two – ass-hat campers. These are the wonky people who love to just sit there and rape your corpse and keep looting you – generally making you feel pretty powerless, especially if you can’t move before you’re killed AGAIN. Who has fun being the whipping boy?
This last reason ties in with other games I play – the free-to-play web-based games.
I currently play a large game called “Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances”. It’s a game where you start off with a base, and you build up your resources and forces, and then you go out and do battle with various players all over the region. It can be fun, but you get the campers who love stomping on the little guys, but………then you get the in-alliance politics, which can kill the fun just as easily. When I deal with more politics than strategy, then it’s time to either break away from the group and just play on your own, or hang it up and go do something else. If you’re not paying for enhancements, then it’s pretty easy to walk away from and just say screw it.
Another game I play is OGame. It’s along the same lines as the last game, but it’s in space, and instead of bases, you have planets. This one is a very REAL-TIME game, because things happen in REAL TIME. It’s an easy game to do your stuff and then walk away from for a while, so not as much stress there, fortunately.
I guess that’s why I like playing alone. If you get frustrated, you can just stop the game and go do something else. Pretzels sound good right about now – or popcorn and a movie. Yeah…..that’s the stuff.
