I have found over the years, that one cannot be a true workaholic – it’s true!
I know some people throw themselves into their careers, work as much and as hard as possible, and be very diligent about making as much as possible as fast as possible, but if you did not know this little fact, then you are not doing it right…..and that is……
Every once in a while, you need to disconnect – take a sanity break – a vacation to re-center, re-compose, and re-group.
I know….some people say "Why would you need that if you love what you do?" You can love what you do all the days of your life, and even tell your friends in the next life how much of a joy it was……..BUT……..if that is all you do, then you did not truly live – you merely existed for the benefit of a paycheck. You did not live. Every once in a while, you have to tell yourself "Enough! It’s time to take a break and unwind!". Listen to this inner voice, and heed the wisdom of those words. I have seen far too many people, from acquaintances to long-time friends, go through the stress of working all the time and never taking time off for themselves.
People………..this isn’t HEALTHY! One cannot just work all of the time and never take some "me" time or "family" time. I know some people rationalize it by saying "but I spend (x) hours with my family, so I don’t work all of the time". Okay fine, but……did you do it on a day off when you DIDN’T have to work? Yes, spending time during a day is great, but sometimes you need to make some real, good, full-on quality time.
I have gone through times where, even when I really enjoy what I do, I have to take a vacation – a real vacation – not just a "weekend" thing. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at gauging when those times are, because my fuse tends to shorten, and I tend to not think of people as humans when they get uppity with me, so………it becomes time to take a disconnect from that part of my life and just go somewhere – do something – anything that has nothing to do with a working life and just enjoy living! If you work a high-stress job, then this advice is especially pertinent to you – take some time off from time to time and UNWIND! Did you know that stress can lead to a lot of different health issues? If you didn’t, then you have been living under a rock for quite a while, or in a deep state of denial.
For me? I’m taking a breather here very soon – a nice long one, and I intend to do some things that I have not been allowing myself time for – like checking out restaurants that I have not been to (yes, there are some I have NOT eaten at here), finishing games I’ve been working on, spending time with the family before school starts for the year, and getting some well-overdue yard work done around the house and make it better than it was before. I’m going to let all of my friends know that if they call me, message me, Skype me – whatever, that they are welcome to contact me for anything that does NOT pertain to what I would normally do when I’m working – that subject is off-limits. I’m going to take a break and relax and ENJOY life – something I rarely seem to be able to do these days, but when I get the chance, it’s always a great thing.
Maybe…….just maybe I’ll even improve my bowling score! Hey…….it could happen!
