I think people love listening to the sound of their own voices.
This, in of itself, is not a bad thing. People listen to themselves sing – whether it be in the shower or in front of a group of people. People listen to their own speeches to practice their oratory skills…….there are a lot of useful applications to listening to your own voice.
The one time that it really gets to me is when they listen to themselves whine over things. It’s that sound that I find is much akin to the sound of fingernails scraping along an old blackboard (and we know how THAT sounds). I make this point because I hear it so much of the time these days in the most insane and stupid situations. I guess what people have forgotten is that we have the freedom to choose and determine the course our own lives will take us (unless you commit crimes of course, and then you’re just TSOL).
I think the biggest time I hear the MOST whining is during elections. People go to the various candidates, listen to the pretty speeches, don’t really do a whole lot of research into the issues, and how the candidates really feel about various topics, and then just go in happily picking the ones they hope will do a good job. Time passes, and then you hear it………the whining about how bad things are. Well, I don’t feel sorry for you for one or both of the following reasons:
1. You didn’t think it was necessary to vote, as you felt it was a waste of your time.
2. You didn’t research your candidate, and you later found out what a real tool they were.
Now granted, you can vote for your heart and conscience, do all of your due diligence, and then find out the other person still won – that’s not your fault, and of course if the other person is a tool, then you are prone to gripe about it – that’s OK, because you were voting for the other person. If you don’t like how things turned out, then do your part again and vote again the next time. Sometimes your vote actually does count, but past experience has shown me that even if your person DOES win, they may still be a tool for various other reasons.
Needs vs. wants – this is another topic that really gets me thinking from time to time. One of the things that our parents teach us early on is that you really should have what you NEED before you go for what you WANT, because often times, the NEEDS are far more important than the wants. Things like shelter, food, clothing, reasonable transportation – these are all things that we NEED. Things like computers, fashions, exotic trips, videogames, etc……..these are all WANTS. Yes, it would be nice to have everything that you want, but keep in mind that they should not override the needs. Also, people have this mad assumption that there are things that they feel they HAVE to have that are not needs – they are luxuries, yet their lives collapse like a house of cards if they don’t have it. This is a personal perception, and one that not every person shares.
So here are some things to carry away and think about:
– If you don’t like the government, VOTE to change it.
– If you don’t like the service you received from a particular business, CHANGE who you deal with.
– If you don’t agree with the practices of a place you do business with, DON’T GO THERE.
– If you don’t like how the company you work for is run, then FIND ANOTHER VOCATION.
– If you don’t like how things are so expensive in the world, then WORK HARDER or find another way of making our world a better place.
Life is about choices. We are born unto this world with intelligence and wisdom that we acquire over the years. Whether we choose to be wise or petty is all a personal choice, but you can’t blame someone else if your choice doesn’t work. After all…….YOU made the choice.
