I sit back and wonder many days “How would our world be now if it was like Gene Roddenbery’s vision?”. Not so much about just the space travel, but a world where we moved beyond the need for monetary gain, and we focused more on bettering the quality of life. You see the signs of it everywhere, yet we seem to be oblivious to it……well, unless you don’t have a lot of money to spend.
We wonder most of the same things:
“Why don’t we have better healthcare?”
Not enough money.
“Why haven’t we done more space exploration to see what is out there?”
Not enough money in the NASA budget.
“Why are so many people homeless?”
They don’t make enough money to live.
You see the pattern this is taking. Those who are well off get every break imaginable, yet those who make very little find it harder and harder to make ends meet. You can start to see why more and more people are frustrated, bitter, and angry.
Where is all the money going? Oh wait…..that’s right…..our never-ending “war on terror”. At least recently it looks like we are getting some help there. Took ’em long enough to get tired of seeing it. One can only hope once the dust settles, we will shift our focus on getting our country back on track.
I think Douglas Adams said it best in Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy when it was noted that people on the whole were unhappy most of the time due to the movement of small green pieces of paper, which was odd because on it wasn’t the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy, so the problem remained.
Another scary trend is our breakneck run into doing all transactions electronically. Are we ready for this? Recent trends would put the brakes on that thought, as company after company is hacked as easily as a hot knife through butter. In the series “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into The Future”, it’s said that credit fraud is a worse crime than murder. Wake up folks…..this is the direction we are flying blind into! Go to get gas? Pay at the pump. Want a new game? Buy and download it online. Buying a new toy? Pay with your app. So much convenience, and yet not as much thought going into tougher cyber – security……at least that is how it’s looking.
Money seems to be causing more headaches and problems for people every single year, yet we have no alternative. While it would be nice to live in a world where we work more on improvement for all, for now, it is just a dream.
