Winters in Montana are fun. They are full of snow, ice, cold, and………more snow, BUT…….they can be entertaining if you’re of the mind to actually get out and enjoy it. One thing that is always amusing is seeing people who think they know how to drive, yet really don’t. Those are the ones that end up sliding off the road into the ditch, french kissing a tree/telephone pole…..you get the idea.
Well, one winter, 3 friends of mine and I decided to go out to the truck stop to have coffee and a bite to eat. Anyone who has ever been around Laurel, Montana knows that the Pelican Truck Plaza is a pretty cool little place to get some nosh and enjoy some company, so on we went. We piled into our friend Tammy’s 1973 Ford Maverick 2-door – all 4 of us, and as my friends will know, I am not a small person – even then, I was quite tall.
So we get out to the truck stop, and the way this place is set up, it has 2 entrances – one for cars and pickups – and then the one further down for the big rigs to pull in with. Well, Tammy – being the adventurous sort she was, decided to go down the big rig driveway to pull in.
Well……..she was going a little too fast for the turn, and here is where the Warner Brothers part comes in. The car slides off the driveway, feeling like it’s just going sideways into mid-air, and then………**PHOOMP!** into the snow it goes!
Sadly, we didn’t have any shovels with us, so we had to MacGyver what we could, using cardboard and other pieces of implements in order to dig ourselves out with. It took us a good couple of hours to dig the car out of the snow, as well as digging a path to the driveway so we could actually park the car.
After that night, we didn’t really go with her in the car if she was driving because we would rather get to the place we were going to in one piece and not have to go through any more exercise than we really needed to as a unnecessary bonus.
