I used to think of myself as a pretty decent website creator. I’m very right-brained (read: creative more than logical) when it comes to my art, and websites are no different. I make cool menu bars, nice headline graphics, and pretty much fill up a site with all kinds of eye candy. Needless to say, this is also why I no longer do PROFESSIONAL websites.
I’m sorry, but on the whole, professional websites are boring. Then again……they’re SUPPOSED to be. They are supposed to be utilitarian and functional – they get you the information you need and that’s about it – no muss no fuss. They don’t like flashy graphics or cool buttons – they want the minimalist approach.
I did two pro sites for companies, and was burned both times. Either they just didn’t like the site at all after I put in all the work (even showing them in-progress stuff), or they would underpay what I thought was fair at the time. Of course, nowadays you can get a professional site for next to nothing, save the monthly maintenance fee, but this was before those days – this was between 1999-2002.
One site specialized in gothic and drag clothing. Her models were HIDEOUS and pics were taken against butcher paper backgrounds, so I had to do a HUGE amount of Photoshopping in order to get the models looking decent and blending the background so it didn’t look cheap. Yeah…….that one shot me right in the back when she would only pay in trade in the end, and just became a really mean-mouthed hag. Last I saw, her store was closed. Good riddance.
The second one was for a shipping and receiving warehouse in CA. Granted, looking back in hindsight, I should have done it differently, but at the time, the VP said in FRONT OF EVERYBODY “We have a website now that we can be PROUD of”! More recently, they did a piece on their new site (which now points to a PARKED DOMAIN! – Hmmmmm!), which totally slammed my site design. Yeah….gee…thanks, buttwipes.
So nowadays, I only do 2 sites (they’re not up just yet, due to lack of a decent computer and my lousy time management) – my personal site, and a fan club site for one of my favorite singers – Mari Iijima. Yes……I’m working on it, as one of my friends would say.
So no…….I won’t do up a website for you. I don’t care how much you want to offer and what you promise.. Go find someone else. There are plenty to choose from.
