I don’t frequent bars much. I used to once, but not so much anymore, and I’ll tell you why.
At one time, bars and pubs used to be places to gather, talk, and eat, drink, and be merry. Nowadays it’s a place where people get drunk while watching sporting events on big-screen TV’s, listen to music at twice concert volume, and gamble on loud machines that beep at the same volume as the ambient music.
When I go out, I think I would prefer a nice, quiet social place with a pool table and a dart board. Perhaps a piano in the corner or a jukebox that plays at a decent level. There is one place that may still be social though – The Loft, which is over where the old 17 Club used to be. I went there a couple of times with friends, and it’s nice enough, so I may go more often.
I know there are other places I can go, but I’m just making my point about those places. I do miss the coffee shops in Denver. The ones here aren’t as cozy. Then again, there are some here I’ve yet to try, so who knows. I prefer to spend time with people instead of relying on email, texting, and Facebook/blogging. Heck……even email is on the decline due to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and others.
Did the Internet age isolate and spoil us too much? Maybe we should try to be more social in real life sometime.
